Get up!

This morning my alarm clock went off at 6:30 and my first thoughts were, “I just did this; I don't feel like doing it again. I'm not living— I'm running, and sleeping because that's what comes next. Stop the world, I want out of this day.”

And God said, not audibly, but loud enough for me to hear, “It's not your day, young lady, it's Mine. You work for me. Now get up!”

I put my feet on the floor.

I couldn't believe the psychological difference it made, just placing the responsibility for existence back where it belongs: firmly on God's shoulders. I'm not an owner, a CEO or even a manager. I'm an employee. I just do the next thing. Like get up. That simple.

Thank God.

Huh ... and to think I got up today because the phone was ringing. Of course when I got to it, there was nobody there; maybe I should check the caller ID, if it shows "out of area" that might be a clue.

One of my favorite preachers has remarked on several occasions that true freedom is being the slave of a perfect master. The only thing the slave has to worry about is his obeying master's will. Absolutely everything else is the master's responsibility.

I guess I'm not a very good employee, I fight it all the time.

Fortunately He still loves us.

When I first began working every morning at 5, I would literally cry as my alarm went off at 4:15. The last thing I wanted to do was get up every day at such an hour. But, slowly, I've begun to see some advantages. For one thing, I can be much more useful for Christ and His kingdom being awake than I can being asleep. I know that being at work so early gives me a chance to affect many people. Another cool thing is driving to work in the middle of that earily beautiful stillness that lays on the horizon just before sunrise, when all the traffic is non-existant and it seems the whole world is....just...gone. It's a cool feeling. I get to drive in that unique block of time and sing and converse with God before I have a huge day ahead. There's just something different about having your Jesus time super early. It makes me feel I can take on the world. Well, at least the day. But the absolute favorite for me is being able to watch the glorious sunrise every morning. I have learned more about the heart of God and His creativity from that alone than the last 4 years of reading verses every day. The more I ask God to show me benefits to early rising and potentially busy days, the more of them I discover every day of the week. And now I think, "Man! Look at all the cool things and all the times of worship and prayer I missed out on because I was SLEEPING!" :0)

Amen to that, Early Riser, but who are you?!
